Blue Orange Green Pink Purple

Life Spilled Open

a have a deep love for all things inspiring...space to create....art that moves me....and love

images of the week.

we took a wrong turn yesterday, after church.  we don't really like our church.  it's bland and old, so most sunday's we leave a little less than inspired.  but yesterday our wrong turn looked like this...and it was beautiful.  the ground littered with little purple flowers, and not just a few, but enough to turn the streets purple.  did i mention that i love the color purple? well i do.  and the trees were so lushious that the sky above them was more brilliant.  and the smell was divine. what a great little moment.
this little video made my morning.  not exactly my story at the moment...but it was, and wishes come true.  just like mr. walt disney is trying to tell us.  yeah for love.

there's a lot to be said about contentment.  finding the simplicity in life, learning to cherish the moments.  realizing the gift of being a teacher, a mentor, and watching a person fly.  i'm choosing the simple moments, the laughter, the songs that you can't help but dance too, the songs sung soulfully in a candlelit room.
so many little blessings to be aware of.
i stumbled upon this quote and love it.

your way begins on the other side become the sky take an axe to the prison wall, escape walk out like someone suddenly born into color do it now.    ~rumi ~

maybe because it feels a little like life now, and challenges me to create, to break down, and to become the sky.  what a great image.  i do like to feel like i'm flying.

and because everything is better in color, here's a couple of photos to take with you.

hawaii

this space is becoming a little journal in these last few days of life here in LA.  I just made coffee...i know should've gone for dinner, but I got a new kind that smells just like my life in kona, HI.  As soon as I took the first sip, memories flooded over me.
The first sight of the island, meeting my roommates.  Realizing my room was too good to be true-that if I choose a room out of a magazine, it couldn't have fit my time there more perfectly. Drinking coffee after a day at the beach, parked in the middle of the road, overlooking the entire kona coast, watching the sun dip into the ocean and screaming if we saw the green light.  Salsa dancing in the bathroom.  the hallways.  lying on the grass in front of my room with new friends. discovering the artist-mason jennings, and the feeling of a smile creeping over my face as i wore ginormous headphones and listened intently to the lyrics to "butterfly".
realizing i was created to create events, encourage artists and wear black. Morning rides to my hawaiian church.  no air conditioning, singing so free, usually this song.  all night dance parties in the commons.  hopping in simone's jeep with no top, and driving to the next undiscovered piece of sand.  smoking a cigar, sleeping on the sand, discovering random friends from around the world.

thank you mr. mayer, allowing my heart to breathe.  so good.

The curious case....

Along the way you bump into people who make a dent on your life. Some people get struck by lightning. Some are born to sit by a river. Some have an ear for music. Some are artists. Some swim the English Channel. Some know buttons. Some know Shakespeare. Some are mothers. And some people can dance.

For what it's worth: it's never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There's no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you're proud of. If you find that you're not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.

good morning...

It's been a long week.  We are making some big changes in our lives and trying to leave places, people and jobs behind is emotional and feels a bit like my heart is ripping out.
Last night I told my dancers I am leaving.  I got mixed reactions, from tears, to strikes but underneath it all I get it.  It's been a year- an emotional heart ripping year.  We discovered ourselves in dance.  We created ballets.  We danced till it hurt.  We cried when we lost our friend.  We cheered and gave a standing ovation at his funeral.  We realized the reality of his loss over and over again.  We became friends, we shared stories.  We laughed.  We realized how deep and beautiful dance is.  So last night, I realized the loss of all of this.  Losing my students, the ones I love, and pour into.  Losing the space-the wood floors and mirrors.  It hurts.
And it feels like this is only the beginning of the loss of moving.  I've been living in LA for 8 yrs.  I grew up here.  I found God.  Fell in love-with music, dance, change, and a few choice people along the way.  I had roomates.  Lived in an alligator green room.  Spent countless nights walking the circle with random friends.  Discovered little gems of LA.   I turned 21, went to college, got a degree.  Fell in love.  Said yes.  Got a dog. Met friends who changed my perspective.  Traveled the world, but always came home to LA.
So in the next few weeks, I'll be taking the time to reflect.  Remember, glean the memories and write some of them here...as a reminder of the life I've lived here.

a found book

well well.  it's been awhile.  we went on a trip to my hometown, didn't somebody write a song about that?  anyways, we spent one day knee deep in snow, enjoying being stuck inside with a blizzard outside.  we don't get to experience that here in LA.  we played yahtzee....found the old scorecards from when I was ten, with my friends names and mine written with a bubble over the "i".  oh how things change.
now i am home, in my own house, feeling so at peace.  just finished some much needed spring cleaning and along the way stumbled upon my favorite book/journal that i thought was lost forever.  oh how it missed it.  what is it you ask?  well...here's a couple of snapshots of the great little book.  it's by sabrina ward harrison a cute little thing with an art side that will blow your mind.

it's a wonderful world

freedom of expression is priceless...i'm a dancer and i love this.  that it's possible and so worth it.  i will try this sometime soon- maybe the next time it rains.  it's always a bit more real if there's rain.

a perfect space

today for the first time in a long time, i found space to breathe.  a space outside, in gorgeous crisp-warm weather, with my mac and a great cup of coffee.  i stumbled upon some amazing photography by Toronto's James Tse
This looks like the perfect space....i heard the other day that an artist loves clean modern lines, because they lend themselves to the creative, like a blank canvas.  i love color, love to be inspired by it, but after seeing this space i agree with the blank canvas.  it seems just perfect....

Artist dates

Today I stumbled upon this street. The buildings painted bright shades and a fountain dedicated to Mary.  It seemed a perfect reflection for Ash Wednesday. To take time to see the beauty in the world, and remember.  I have a book called The Artist's Way, by Julia Cameron that challenges artists to set aside time to take their inner artist on dates.  I like this concept, and know sometimes we need to be intentional.  I also love the idea of stumbling upon beauty, finding art in the everyday and inspiration around the corner.

inspired tuesdays....

It seems everyone's blogs seem to have a designated day for blogging about things they love....well here's mine.  I love tuesdays because my morning is slow, more free then other mornings...and my classes at night don't require as much out of me.  Last night was one of those nights where you can't sleep once your head hits the pillow.  Sure up until that point I was fighting my eyelids, but one the lights were out my brain turned on.  I lay in bed pondering random things, that this morning are so foggy.  I always seem to come up with the best ideas at night...at least they seem that way at the time.
How inspiring is this video....i love it...the raw, the light, the detail.

Mountain retreat

I haven't blogged in a few days because we were on a retreat in the mtns.  So amazing to wake up each morning and walk outside and see snow covered hills, barren trees and open space.  It did something for my soul....not to mention the break from coffee was probably much needed.
Here's a couple pics from our cabin....so beautiful.

sweet raw

I'm looking for ideas for dance class tonite...especially my lyrical and jazz class with my "old enough to get it" girls.  We've done a few exercises in lyrical to move from dancing on top of the music, to engaging heart and soul and becoming a part of the lyrics, letting them wash over us until our natural response becomes the dance.  We've used phrases, dark rooms lit only by a lamp, pictures, stories and songs I was sure they could identify with....but because some of my dancers are so young, both in age and experience it just wasn't working. Until an unexpected death in our studio family changed our hearts and lives....and now we dance.  I see the hurt in their eyes, the anger in their feet and my soul is happy- because they've found the meaning and why we dance.
Now onto ideas for tonight- I know some of my girlies are addicted to Ron Pope ...especially this song.  It always seems to help if they're familiar with the song.  If anyone has any other creative ideas- shoot em at me.

free falling

This is one of my favorite blogs to follow for a couple of reasons...first, the story grips your heart and makes you stare a little longer at the beautiful moments in life.  Then there's her kids, their gorgeous smiles, their free falling curls and their love of life.  And of course her eye for photography- there's something quite raw and vintage about her shots....so go ahead and check her out...

Brian Andreas

This man is nothing short of inspiring.  His quotes always seem to strike something deep in my soul...somewhere deeper than life.  Here are a few of my favorites that I've come across in past years.
"Anyone can slay a dragon...but try waking up every morning and loving the world all over again.  That's what takes a real hero."
"I wish you could have been there for the sun and the rain and the long hard hills.  For the sound of a thousand conversations scattered along the road.  For the people laughing and crying & remembering at the end.  But mainly, I wish you could've been there."
Don't you hear it? She asked & I shook my head no & then she started to dance & suddenly there was music everywhere & it went on for a very long time & when I finally found words all I could say was thank you."

I will add more quotes as time goes by, but for now these are the ones that are soaking up my time.  Allowing me to feel the grief of losing someone special and the sweet raw of finding life.  For now I will leave you with this... doesn't the beach sound relaxing during this cold weather..... breathe in, and exhale.
